Introduction to the Linguistics of Native Languages

This class will introduce you to linguistics. We will learn about the sounds of your language, the languages of the Pacific Northwest, English and French, and we will learn where these sounds are made in your vocal tract. We will practice how to say sounds and learn how to transcribe them. You will learn ways to teach sounds. We will also learn about how your languages is put together; what types or classes of words there are in your language; and about how words order themselves in sentences and questions. By the end of our two weeks together, you will know in some detail about the sounds of your language (phonetics), and about word structure (morphology), and sentence structure (syntax). And you will become familiar with linguistic terminology.
