NILI offers several events each summer geared for new and experienced language revitalization teachers

NILI Summer Institute 2025
June 22-28
In 1998, NILI held its first Summer Institute (SI) which has been running continuously since. At SI, which traditionally meets live on the UO campus the last two weeks of June, participants from across Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, North America and elsewhere gather to work on their languages. From elders to youth, we live, learn and speak together.
We offer strands for beginning and experienced teachers, focused on skills for building language use and supporting your students. Participants will also attend the Tuxámshish Revitalization Learning Series (TRaiLS), a series of talks and discussions focused on Indigenous Language Revitalization. TRaiLs is a hybrid event, available online to people who do not attend SI.
Summer Institute 2025 will be Sunday June 22 (dorm check in and opening activities beginning in the afternoon)-Saturday June 28 (ending by 4:00 pm).
TRaiLS 2025
June 23-27
The Tuxámshish Revitalization Learning Series (TRaiLS) began in 2020 as a pandemic response. When our traditional face-to-face SI was cancelled, we developed a series of one-hour, online talks profiling different language practitioners engaged in community language projects. Our goal was to continue to offer access to professional development and community building opportunities in spite of restrictions.
Today TRaiLS is a one-week online discussion series that parallels SI each summer. It includes daily presentations and conversations led by experts from Native communities. Our purpose in offering TRaiLS is to reach a wide audience of revitalization practitioners; to highlight Indigenous Language Revitalization experts from diverse communities; and to build relationships between online and in-person audiences.
For 2025, we will have 5 talks starting at 12:30pm PDT Monday to Friday during the week of June 23 that will be open for anyone to join online from any location.
