Summer Institute 2021

For Summer 2021 we have several choices – the LRLS discussion series and two classes

Language Revitalization Learning Series (LRLS)

Based on our successful 2020 adaption to Covid, LRLS is envisioned as an online, interactive forum where language revitalization practitioners can discuss issues of importance to themselves and their communities. Speakers come from around the Pacific Northwest, North America and world. Some topics for 2021 include: teaching endangered languages during pandemic times; an online dictionary project; using lullabies for language revitalization; creating a healthy language environment; and teaching endangered languages through Zoom.

Each session will last for 1 hour 15 minutes, from noon to 1:15pm PDT. Speakers will typically first present their ideas or outline what their community is working on, followed by time for discussion and interaction in smaller breakout rooms hosted by a facilitator, and finally wrapping up by a chance to regroup, bounce ideas off one another and/or ask questions of the speakers.

Costs: With generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, we are able to offer LRLS on a sliding scale this year. No fee is required and costs will not be a barrier to participating. Any fees collected will help to offset associated expenses for discussion facilitators.

If you’ve registered for the class, you will receive a password for the LRLS webpages.

Class I – Community Project Planning Development (CPPD)

Developed in partnership with the Administration for Native Americans (ANA), this two week course will walk you step by step through the various stages of envisioning and carrying out a language project for your community. The class meets each day over Zoom for 1 hour and 45 minutes (9:30-11:15 am PDT) and you can expect daily independent work outside of class.

Costs$350  $100. This course is in part funded by the ANA which allows us to charge a reduced rate.

If you’ve registered for the class, you will receive a password for the CPPD course page.

Class II – Using Stories and Storybooks for Teaching Indigenous Languages (Stories)

In this two week course you will become familiar with how to create a story book for an endangered language from start to finish. The class will cover everything from generating ideas for books, to binding and printing a finished book. During the class you will create a storybook for your community. The class meets each day over Zoom for 1 hour and 45 minutes (2:00-3:45 pm PDT) and you can expect daily independent work outside of class.

Costs: $350. This is our standard rate for a two-week, online course.

If you’ve registered for the class, you will receive a password for the Stories and Storybooks course page.
