About the Indigenous Languages in Schools Workshop Series
The NW-NALRC's Indigenous Languages in Schools: Models and Modifications for Educators workshops are designed to introduce participants to options for school-based programming (e.g. language medium instruction and language immersion) and considerations for how to implement such programming so that Indigenous languages thrive in schools. This series was designed to address this topic as it applies to Alaskan Native and Native American Languages in the NW-NALRC Region (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) -- but much of the content is broadly applicable. The workshop series is organized into 5 parts. By the end of this workshop series, participants will have tools to:
Compare different models of school-based language programs
Choose a language program model that best fits their communities’ current capacity
Implement teaching practices that best support increased language use
Access resources needed to continue developing their community’s school-based language programming
Generate a plan with actionable steps to move forward in building a school-based language program that fits their community
Each workshop has 2 associated Drop-In Assistance Hours, which are held on the same week as the workshop. All workshops provide participants with purpose-crafted worksheets to help guide your planning. The workshops include insights from leaders and educators currently working in Indigenous language programs throughout the Pacific Northwest region. The series was developed and is facilitated by Dr. Allison Taylor-Adams. Dr. Taylor-Adams earned her Ph.D in Linguistics from the University of Oregon in 2022. Her research centers around language revitalization, in particular, the experiences of language learners and teachers who work to reclaim and revitalize their languages and how those learners and teachers can be better supported in their work.
Registrants will have access to all workshops and drop-in assistance time associated with this workshop series. That said, you do not need to attend all workshops in the series if you do not wish to.
All instruction is provided online and instructors will join online. Participants will join remotely via zoom (please see technology section below.)

Using a computer rather than a mobile device will improve your experience - you will be able to better interact with others, participate in hands-on activities, and see presented materials.
