Course Content at Summer Institute

Summer Institute classes will help you support learner and speaker growth across their journeys. The beginners’ track focuses on core Indigenous language teacher skills. The experienced track goes more into depth into some elements of teaching, looking at topics such as self-assessment, developing activities tied to student levels, and building language use throughout the community.

All SI participants will take part in TRaiLS, our discussion series for language revitalization practitioners.

We’ll focus more heavily on course content in the mornings, and in putting that content into practice in the afternoons. Afternoons at Summer Institute will also include dedicated time for sharing and networking.

Our instructor line-up includes Tuwalatin/Gregory Sutterlict (Yakama Nation and Chehalis Tribe; Ichishkíin language) and Regan Anderson (Northwest Indian Language Institute, Ichishkíin/Sahaptin language instructor and researcher) leading our beginner track morning classes.

For our experienced track students, we have Marnie Atkins (Wiyot Tribal Member), Judith Fernandes (Northwest Indian Language Institute), Robert Elliott  (Northwest Indian Language Institute) Joana Jansen (Northwest Indian Language Institute), Dr. Jaeci Hall lined up (Tututni / Coquille Indian Tribe), and Paulina Whitehat (Diné; Navajo Nation) with others yet to come.

Stay tuned for more details on course content, additional instructors, and who is teaching what.

Two Teacher Strands

Educators in the beginners track will typically have one year or less of teaching in the classroom. Those in the experienced track will, conversely, typically have a year or more. There may be some exceptions, depending on how intensive an educator’s experience may or may not have been in a given year or more.

If you are uncertain what track you best fit in, please reach out to us at nwili@uoregon.edu or 541-346-0730. We’ll be happy to work with you to find your best place!
