Sticks and Stones…and a bit of luck! Revitalization and Native Language Development Using Games in a Classroom Setting

Cheryl Tuttle and students of the Wailaki 2 and Wailaki 3 classes at Round Valley High School will demonstrate how games are used to introduce and build Wailaki vocabulary, as well build individual and group confidence in an active language engagement environment.

Session participants will participate in a hands-on experience playing a variety of fast-moving, commonly available board games and a traditional tribal game. They will discuss the process of determining how specific Wailaki terms and phrases were developed to compliment the movements involved in each game. Game terms and phrases are intended to be learned in classroom settings and find extended use in other everyday settings. Games include the learning domains of numbers, colors, commands, and encouragements and questions.
