Advocacy and Authenticity

What do the concepts of authenticity and learner authentication mean to different indigenous language activists?

In this class, we’ll explore diverse perspectives on authentic language and authentic language use. Topics include borrowing words from other languages, language for new domains, switching between languages, and the notion of “fluent speaker.” We’ll also look at language from a learner’s perspective and consider learners’ lives, goals, and needs in the selection of tasks, topics, and materials.

Throughout our discussions and activities, we will focus on our shared activism in support of our indigenous languages and respect for diverse perspectives around these complex issues.
